Some stories beautifully illustrate how life comes full circle, and the connection between Erin Staley and Andrew Geyer is one of them. Once teacher and student, they now work side by side at Genesee Valley BOCES in Batavia, each dedicated to inspiring the next generation of learners. Their story is one of perseverance, passion, and the lasting impact of educators who take the time to truly connect with their students.
Erin first met Andrew when he was a third-grader at Oakfield-Alabama Central School. Even at a young age, Andrew faced challenges that could have held him back, but Erin saw through the struggles to his potential. “He was an excellent student and a pleasure to teach,” Erin recalls. More than that, she took the time to understand him on a deeper level. “Andrew had obstacles to overcome, and he did it seamlessly. I admire his tenacity to become the best version of himself.”
For Andrew, Erin was the first teacher who truly made him feel seen. “She took the time to get to know me and my struggles,” he shares. “I wasn’t the easiest student to work with, but she made the effort to understand me, and that made all the difference.” Erin’s belief in him planted a seed that would grow over time, giving him the confidence to face challenges head-on.
Fast forward to high school, and Andrew found his calling in the Metal Trades program at Genesee Valley BOCES. Enrolling from 2007 to 2009, he discovered a passion for welding and the skills that would shape his future. “BOCES was one of the best decisions I could have made,” Andrew says. “It gave me the confidence and skills to succeed. More than that, it gave me a sense of purpose.” The program didn’t just teach him how to weld; it taught him how to overcome obstacles and set meaningful goals for himself.
Years later, inspired by teachers like Erin and his own transformative experience in the program, Andrew returned to BOCES as a metal trades and welding instructor. Since 2018, he has been dedicated to empowering students in the same way he was once supported. “Because of the impact of a few great teachers and the program itself, I knew it was important to come back and give students like me the best chance to succeed,” he explains. “I wanted to be the kind of teacher who truly understands and supports students in ways that make a difference.”
For Erin, seeing Andrew return as a colleague was a moment of pride and reflection. “It makes me feel proud and that our work as educators truly matters,” she says. While they don’t work directly together, Erin and Andrew share a mission: helping students recognize their potential and equipping them with the tools they need to succeed. “I knew he was destined for great things,” Erin adds, noting how rewarding it is to see her former student thriving in his career.
Erin’s work now focuses on the Intensive Therapeutic Program for students in grades 8-12, a role that requires deep connections and unwavering patience. “Building relationships is a constant,” she explains. “Showing students that someone believes in them is the first step. Once they believe in themselves, they have the power to accomplish their goals.” Her approach is rooted in the same principles she used with Andrew all those years ago: understanding, support, and belief.
In his classroom, Andrew strives to instill not just technical skills but also employability and resilience. “Not every student will become a welder, and that’s okay,” he says. “As long as we help them grow and prepare for the workforce, that’s what matters.” Andrew understands the challenges many of his students face because he’s been in their shoes. His own journey, marked by determination and hard work, serves as an example of what’s possible with the right mindset and support.
Their shared story is a testament to the ripple effect of education. Erin’s encouragement helped Andrew persevere, and now Andrew is paying it forward, guiding his own students toward success. For Erin, seeing a former student return as a colleague affirms the lasting impact of teaching. For Andrew, working alongside Erin reminds him of how far he’s come and why he chose this path. “It’s an honor to mold young students and watch their growth,” Andrew says. “Seeing their skills and confidence grow reaffirms that I’ve made the right career choice.”
Andrew’s journey is an inspiration not only to his students but also to anyone striving to achieve their goals. He teaches them that setbacks are part of the process and that persistence is key to success. “His journey was driven by passion and purpose,” Erin says. “It shows students that even big dreams are achievable when broken down into manageable steps.”
Together, Erin and Andrew exemplify the profound impact of education. Their story highlights how connections formed in the classroom can endure, influencing paths and shaping futures. From teacher and student to colleagues, they stand as a testament to how dedication, perseverance, and mutual belief can inspire and empower others.
Rachel Slobert, Executive Principal at Genesee Valley BOCES in Batavia, shares her thoughts:
“The idea to share this story came to me one day while speaking to Mr. Geyer’s class on the first day of school. As I watched him interact with his students, I was struck by the depth of his care and understanding. Any student in that room could bring their struggles or concerns to him, and without fail, he would either a.) know exactly how to respond or b.) offer a piece of his own experience, showing how he’d overcome similar challenges.
Having worked closely with Erin, I knew that the man now teaching Welding had so much more to share. His story, with Erin being one of its most significant chapters, is one of resilience, growth, and dedication. They’ve both worked so hard to become the educators they are today—an inspiring journey I felt needed to be told.
Their story isn't just about teaching; it’s about the strength, perseverance, and love they bring into every classroom. It’s a reminder of the incredible educators we have here—people who don’t just teach, but who truly invest in the lives of those they mentor. I’m so thankful to them both for opening up and sharing a glimpse of their journeys, not just to inspire others, but to show the heart and soul of what it means to be an educator.”
